Dimensions

Acrocanthosaurus is a very large meat-eating dinosaur notable for the long spines on its backbone, each of which extended up about 12 inches (30 centimeters).

In life, these spines would have been covered with skin and muscle, forming a distinct ridge or hump along the back of the animal.

Although Acrocanthosaurus was larger than its more ancient relative Allosaurus, the two dinosaurs may have been similar in the way they moved and in the methods they used for capturing prey.

The only known species of this meat-eater, Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, is named after Atoka County, Oklahoma, where its fossils were first found.
